What is the ISOFIX system for?

ISOFIX System

The Isofix system was implemented in the European Union in 1995 through a standard of the International Organisation for Standardisation (IIN). As you can see in the cover image, this specific universal type-approval of children’s car seats has a badge to demonstrate the system compatibility with thew vehicle.

Currently, this system is quite common in modern cars and, although it is not a mandatory, car manufacturers intend to follow the best safety standards without looking at cost.

 

What is the ISOFIX system and what is it for?

The entire ISOFIX fastening system aims to reduce the impacts on passengers circulating in children’s car seats.  It allows a greater safety to the child in the rear seats.

  • Two bar-shaped anchor points.
  • 6mm bars fixed to the chassis
  • Two rigid fasteners present in the children’s hook-shaped seat
  • A third support point to prevent rotation

The Isofix system is quite simple to place and remove and, in addition, allows the user to remove the child seat with just two clicks.

In case of airbag opening this system protects the child’s cervical collar, avoiding irreversible damages.

 

 

What are the ISOFIX System Disadvantages?

 

  • Incompatible Vehicles

Most vehicles are compatible with this system, but there are still exceptions. Some compact city cars block the seat belt attachment point what makes impossible to use the ISOFIX System .

 

  • Incompatible Systems

Low-cost children’s car seats manufacturers do not use this system and prefer to produce their own safety system reducing user choices.

 

How should I install the ISOFIX system?

  1. Prepare access to the anchor points.
  2. Prepare the chair hooks for fitting into the anchor points.
  3. Place the child car seat into the  back seats preferably;
  4. Attach the hooks to the anchor points.
  5. Check the hooks fitting system marked by a piece of green color.
  6. Fasten the belt or adjust the support
  7. Check if all hooks are perfectly tighten
