How to properly care your Fog Lights

Fog lamps are present in almost any vehicle nowadays.

These fog lamps together with the headlamps must be kept in good condition so that they can be  operated whenever necessary.

In this article we show some care you should take with the fog lights. Well, look!

Fog lights

Fog lights, also known as fog lights, are important when circulating in unfavourable weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow and fog.

These lights allow the beam of light to pass through the water droplets suspended in the air and, in addition to illuminating the road in front of it, allow the vehicle to be seen by drivers circulating in its rear.

Where are the fog lights?

Fog lamps started to be used only at the rear but currently most vehicles use them at the front as well.

  • The rear fog lights are located on the same side of the driver’s steering wheel, i.e. if the car has the steering wheel on the left side, the rear fog light will be on that side.
  • The front fog lights are two and are located on each side of the lower part of the front bumper.

How do fog lights work?

Fog lamps work by the refraction of the light reflected in the water droplets. This phenomenon allows the road to be illuminated in its entire width avoiding the dazzling of conductors traveling in the opposite direction

How to turn on the fog lights?

  1. Locate the headlight control;
  2. Turn on the mediums;
  3. Look for the lights symbol;
  4. Click the symbol button or turn the lever;
  5. Make sure they’re on.

When should I wear the fog lights?

Fog lamps should be used where the condition of the road does not allow the driver to see at a distance of 100 m. If these conditions are not met and the driver has the fog lights on, the driver may be fined.

What care should I take with the fog lamps?

  • Alignment

You should align the fog lights to illuminate only the road not dazzling the other drivers

  • Cleaning

Fog lamps must be clean so that light can pass through the headlamp and illuminate the road.

  • Lamps check up

If you check all the car lamps, you won’t have any problems when you have to use this lights.

How to regulate?

  1. Place the car with the fog lights on in front of a wall at a distance of 5 meters;
  2. Measure the light height from the center of the optics to the ground. Assuming that this measure is 66 cm, it will guide you as a reference for the next marking on the wall. The measurements should be as follows: you must subtract 5 cm from the measurement of the height to the ground, which is equivalent to 5 meters away, i.e. 1% of the lamp inclination;
  3. Make a mark on the wall in a horizontal line at a height of 61 centimeters;
  4. Turn on the lights and make sure that the projected light beam on the wall is on the horizontal line you marked;
  5. If it is outside from the wall marking, you should look for headlight adjustment screws that are usually near the foglights.

As you can see, the process of regulating fog lamps is like the headlamps alignment . To learn more about how this alignment is done, see the headlamp alignment article.

If you think this process is complex, we advise you to go to your mechanic to align the fog lights with  a headlight focusing machine.

How to clean?

  1. Use a cleaner and a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches
  2. Use water to start cleaning the fog light
  3. Rub with microfiber cloth and cleaner.
  4. Pass water to remove the foam;
  5. Pass a dry cloth on the optics.

If the optics continue to look worn, you should polish it or use a headlight reset kit.
